Two National Parks

Kushiroshitsugen National Park

This is domestically a rare type of national park where the largest wetland in Japan, ""Kushiro Marsh"", was solely designated.
You can see an ecosystem comprising various northern plant species as well as rare animals and plants.

Akan-Mashu National Park

The ecosystem includes mixed forests of coniferous and broad-leaved trees and caldera lakes such as Lake Mashu, which is one of the best scenery spots in Hokkaido, and Lake Akan, which is famous as the habitat of marimo lake balls. The biota is truly diverse, being among the most diverse globally.

Special natural treasure the Red-crowned crane

Red-crowned cranes are called "sarurun kamui (god of the marshes)" in the Ainu language. The red-crowned cranes, which is Japan's Special Natural Monument, have been the symbol of Kushiro Marsh since the ancient times.

Special natural treasure Marimo

How can these beautiful, large algae grow in Lake Akan? Their growing environment made by the combination of "forests", "volcanoes", "lakes" and "rich nature"is as if it is a dispensation of Heaven.
